In a lot of sports gaming YouTube videos, there’s a sub genre in which teams that beat other teams get their best player, and well that definitely never happens in real life, this is an example of that happening in real life. I’ve always hated KD for his ability to move on and abandon cities for very good reason, I think we should really look into the fact that this man has no home. After he retires who’s hanging up that number? The game all around was great, but what in his mind took him to a place where he thought like “yeah I gotta join them!” Is that not rooted in loser mentality? And then you go ahead and leave Russ, who by the way, was the next seasons MVP! Many people want to give KD credit, I understand he went back to back after this, but I really feel like he weighs down the teams he joins. Never would have came to that hypothesis if not for this game though, and it was pretty special, but its impact at large is rather negative. They weren’t a fun dynasty to me, at all.

this is the toughest game i've ever rated. at a point in time this game broke me. this game had so many implications and caused one of the greater ripple effects in sports. my rating also changes based on when im rating it. if i rated this in 2016, it would be a 0 as i would have just watched my team blow a 3-1 lead in the conference finals to arguably the greatest team of all time. if I had rated this prior to the thunder winning the finals last season it would probably get a 6-6.5 because the play on the court wasn't exactly great. the thunder weren't great and apart from steph, no one on the warriors did anything crazy. however, after watching my team win I am far less bitter about this game (to the surprise of no one). with that being said, I have tried to take everything into account, the on court product, how it made me feel, the context of a blown 3-1 lead, a trip to the nba finals on the line and the ripple effect. a 7.7 may seem low but I can't forget how this game killed me.

Despite the stakes and the long term impact of this game, it was not as close as the final score will tell you. The first half was kinda close, but when that 3rd quarter happened, the game was basically over. The Thunder never made it closer than 5 points and the Oracle crowd knew they had it in the bag. I wouldn’t be surprised if they felt like that going in. I distinctly remember my feelings going into this game. “OKC is screwed.” The Thunder had just been slapped in the face by Game 6 Klay and putting OKC’s morale 6 feet underground. Even if the Thunder could find the strength to compete, any large build-up of momentum for the Warriors could end their season and that is exactly how this game played out. Obviously, this game’s historical impact is near the top, but if you’re anything like me, you don’t like some of the impact this game had on the NBA. The actual game itself was more of a low 7 to me, but I can’t ignore the greater impact. So this gets a mid-7 out of respect.

This game has 2 ratings. To start we will go with the game which was a 7.2. The game overall wasnt that great the Warriors were able to control a lot of the game with there shooting and it still felt like this OKC team was flat. Oracle crowd played a huge role in this game to make it the 8 point game it was but felt like more since OKC was digging out of a hole most of the 4th. The second rating is impact which is 100/10. This game shaped the league we know today. We dont know what would gave happened with the Thunder if they won this series. I suspect that KD would have stayed and honestly they matched up ok with the Cavs and may have had a shot. Here is what we do know from this game. KD would go on to leave to go to the Warriors and win his titles forever shifting how we remember this Warriors now Dynasty. The Thunder would then go onto making cores around Westbrook who got his MVP and then lead to PG-13 which lead to Shai. This game sent a ripple effect which we are feeling in 2026

The implications this game had on the future of the NBA is wild. I’ll let everyone else explain that.

In the moment there was no way of knowing what would happen just a few weeks later. The breaking news on ESPN: A secret meeting over 4th of July weekend in the Hamptons with Steph, Draymond & KD after losing the 3-1 Finals have now joined forces. I was shocked in the moment but it was more of wonder and surprise than anything. Fast forward to Game 3 of the 2017 Finals and KD hitting the dagger from 28 ft in Cleveland and it was pure hate in my heart. I don’t think I’ve ever hated a team more. Game 1 of that Finals will forever haunt me with how JR Smith botched that offensive rebound. KD has never been at the level of LeBron/Kobe/Jordan because of the decisions he made as a direct results of the outcome of this game.

This game changed the NBA forever. If the Thunder had won this game, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would not be on the Thunder today. Because Kevin Durant would've stayed in Oklahoma City. Not only him, but the Big 3 of him, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden would've stayed together. Who knows how many rings they win together? The NBA as we know it today would be so different, not only from a who's on what team standpoint, but also the strategies that front offices would use to build their teams.

The game that changed NBA history forever. People always forget the Thunder blew a 3-1 lead to this team. Which altered the landscape of the NBA forever. All for the wrong reasons.

We kept the dream 73-9 season alive a little longer with this 3-1 comeback and led to signing Kevin Durant in free agency and winning the next two NBA titles. This probably was our most important playoff victory ever
