Legendary performance in a much better game than you may realize as Michael Jordan nearly willed his team to victory against one of the best teams ever. I know this might be a shock, but I was not alive for this game. Luckily, we have the power of technology and thanks to YouTube, I was able to watch the full game. Michael Jordan came into this game as the heavy underdog. MJ had missed basically the entire season with a foot injury. Stan Albeck was his head coach in what would be the final year of his career as a head coach. There were virtually no good players alongside him (remember, no Pippin at this point). They had old man Gervin, who came in for 5 minutes and didn’t do anything, Young Charles Oakley, who was getting bullied by McHale and Parish, and Orlando Woolridge, a shoot-first forward. MJ’s 63 obviously led the team, but he also led the team in assists with 6. He was truly the engine. When MJ hit 63, he tied the game at 131 with 1 minute to go in 2OT. The ending was strange.

While I of course was not alive for this, this was one of the greatest games in Celtics history and NBA history in general. The rising dynasty of the Chicago Bulls vs the prime Larry Bird Boston Celtics. Jordan with 63 points and the Bulls couldn't pull it off. I mean what else can you say about this. A perfect overtime game. The Celtics would go on to win the NBA Finals this year, the 3rd and final of Bird's career. Bird-McHale-Parish was just such a special big three, and will always be one of if not the biggest part of Celtics history.

While I respect the point total and it's place in NBA History as well as the fact that this Celtics team was a bunch of World Beaters, I cannot give this a 10 because the Bulls didn't win. Not only that but Jordan himself said the points meant nothing because the result was a loss. He's right. The ultimate competitor would end up getting swept by this Celtics team who would eventually go on to win the Championship. But 63 points still being the all time single game playoff record is awesome. I hope it stays that way for a long time. This was the first time that Jordan's lore went beyond the regular season and as we know it was certainly not the last.

The Bulls almost pulled of the impossible. Jorden really made himself know to everyone that he can be the best player in the hard wood any night against anybody.

There's so much to say about this game just from a sporting perspective and show. Despite being game two in a three game series, the drama of the game going to double OT as Michael Jordan hits a historic 63 points is extremely high while also hitting 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Larry Bird's performance is also not one to miss either as he went for 36/8/12. The first half having the drama of a Bulls lead only for the Celtics to catch up and make it by the end was the icing on the cake for me. Being able to watch the original CBS broadcast was also something that was a joy to watch. Not having ads plastered all over the ring or gambling splits all over my screen was extremely refreshing. I would also say that this entire series as a whole is probably worth watching, but this one was truly the biggest show of all of them. The drama of a double overtime will always be fun. If you can watch this game, watch it. It's certainly not one to miss at all even today.

MJ going demi-god mode and the Celtics doing everything in the world to stop it. If the Bulls won this game this would be a untouchable game for a single player preformance in my opinion but with a loss it feels like only another number for the record books.
