One of the most memorable moments in NBA Finals history and a sequence that is played in nearly every NBA highlights montage. Up there with Jordan’s Game 6 cross over and buzzer beater; Iverson’s iconic sideline fadeaway and step over of Ty Lue on his way to 48 pts and a Game 1 shocking upset of the Kobe & Shaq Lakers. This one went to OT and Shaq had 44 points himself. Lakers went on to win their 2nd of an eventual 3 peat and were dominant in winning the next 4 in a row. I remember this as a kid in middle school we were all imitating Iverson at recess it was as close to a viral moment as you got back then.

16-1. I was 9 years old when this game happened (CLASS OF 2010 WAZZZZZZUP!) and, you know, at the peak of my basketball-addicted self. Living in south Montana we weren't blacked out for anybody so it was convenient. I remember walking into the living room with this game on and I was like "Wait, that started? Can I join?" Parents said yes so I watched as Allen Iverson big boy'd Ty Lue on a 48 point game. I fell in love with AI after that one (Not Philly because... I lived in south Montana) and was sad to see him never get a ring. I think a lot of people forgot that the Lakers would have had a perfect postseason if they never lost this game. From loving AI in 2001 to hating AI in 2023.

I've always loved Allen Iverson. A short guy, but man he could dribble, he could shoot, he could pass, he was the prime example of what a point guard should do. He became an inspiration to an entire generation and part of that was games like this. 48 points in this game. Carried the 76ers the entire game and the Lakers, even with Shaq putting up 44 and a young Kobe Bryant, had zero answer for The Answer. As much of a 76ers hater as I am, I will always love Allen Iverson.

A hardwood classic that involved a legendary performance and a story out of a fairytale. This was the definition of a David and Goliath matchup. The 2001 Lakers were undefeated in the playoffs going into this matchup. They hadn’t just not lost a game, they had annihilated a stacked western conference before arriving to the Finals. Meanwhile, the 76ers had endured a struggle fest of a playoff run. They nearly got eliminated by the Raptors in round 2 in 7 and controversially beat the Bucks in 7 thanks to questionable officiating. Combine that with the David-Goliath-esque size difference between Allen Iverson and Shaq and a Lakers beat down felt inevitable. You can measure a person’s height, you cannot measure the size of their heart. Iverson put that on full display with an incredible performance, capped off with the step over Tyronn Lue. The Lakers won the next 4, but AI gave us an unforgettable performance and became the sole reason LA was denied perfection. He became a legend.

Remember this was as close as AI ever got to getting a ring, which sucks.

what an awesome game. ai just looked untouchable and was able to score at will. an underrated point i dont see talked about much was how dominant shaq was as well. it seemed like for every ai highlight it was followed by shaq dunking on someone.

Back when AI ment Allen Iverson, the good ole days. This game was before a was born so I have never truly seen Shaquille O’Neal play. But what was the lord thinking when he created him. 7’2 350, an absolute tank. Then you have Kobe, an absolute legend and one of the greatest players to ever do it, right up there with O’Neal. Now AI, watching him shoot a mid range from the corner is ugly but it goes in every time.

A great game which sadly I can say I only watched highlights off. AI is remember and thought of so highly because of preformances like this. He was so effortlessly able to put his team on his back and carry them with his handles and scoring. This Lakers team was a powerhouse and he was able to handle them. Legend. Of. The. Game.
